Root Canals (Root Canal Therapy)

Root canal therapy is a dental procedure designed to save and repair a tooth that is severely infected or damaged. This treatment involves removing the damaged pulp (the innermost part of the tooth), cleaning and disinfecting the inner chambers, and then sealing the tooth to prevent further infection.

Indications for Root Canal Therapy

Severe Tooth Decay

When tooth decay penetrates deep into the tooth and reaches the pulp, causing significant pain and infection.

Infection or Abscess

Bacteria can invade the pulp through deep decay, cracks, or chips in the tooth, leading to an infection or abscess (a pus-filled pocket) at the root of the tooth.

Fractured Tooth

A crack or chip that exposes the pulp, making it vulnerable to bacteria and infection.

Repeated Dental Procedures

Multiple treatments on the same tooth can cause the pulp to become inflamed or infected.

Deep Cavities

Cavities that are so deep they cause irreversible damage to the pulp, leading to severe pain and potential infection.

The Root Canal Process

Root canal therapy typically involves the following steps:

  1. Diagnosis and Preparation: Your dentist will take x-rays to determine the extent of the damage or infection. Local anesthesia is applied to numb the affected area to ensure comfort during the procedure.
  2. Accessing the Pulp: The dentist creates an opening in the crown of the tooth to access the infected or damaged pulp.
  3. Removing the Pulp: Using special tools, the dentist carefully removes the pulp from the pulp chamber and root canals.
  4. Cleaning and Disinfecting: The empty chambers and canals are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected to remove any remaining bacteria and prevent further infection.
  5. Filling and Sealing: The cleaned canals are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. The access hole is then sealed with a temporary or permanent filling.
  6. Restoration: After the root canal, the tooth will need to be restored to full function. This usually involves placing a crown over the tooth to protect it and restore its shape and strength.

Benefits of Root Canal Therapy

  • Pain Relief: Eliminates the pain caused by the infected or damaged pulp.
  • Infection Prevention: Stops the spread of infection to surrounding teeth and tissues.
  • Tooth Preservation: Saves your natural tooth, avoiding the need for extraction and more extensive dental procedures.
  • Restored Function: With a crown, the treated tooth can function normally for eating and speaking.
